So you’re thinking about braces or your dentist has suggested you see an orthodontist for yourself or for a child. Now, you’re eager to get started or you’re hesitating because you’re unsure what braces can really do and if it’s worth the effort. If you’re the parent of a young child or an adult, you may also be wondering if and when it’s the right time to get braces. We’re here to give you the information you need to make the best decision for you and your smile.

No Referral Necessary
You don’t need a referral from your dentist. The first step is to call us for an appointment – the consultation – this appointment is free in Winnipeg. Call us at 204-942-1667 or text us at 204-781-2885.
Your Consultation Appointment
One of our priorities at Smile Sooner is that you should be comfortable with both your treatment plan and the treatment itself. That focus on your comfort begins at the consultation appointment. Since getting braces is really about your personal goals, we’ll begin with listening to you: what are your concerns about your teeth and your smile? Do you have questions about the different kinds of braces? We encourage children, teens and adults to talk to us. We’ll do our best to help guide you to the best decision for you.
Assessing Your Dental Health
The next part of your consultation appointment is taking a look at your smile, teeth and jaws to see what’s happening; if you have a recent x-ray from your dentist, bring it along, or ask that it be sent to us, so we can see what’s going on under your gums. If you don’t have a recent dental x-ray, we can take one at our office the day of your consultation. Even without an x-ray, we can still get a good idea of what needs to be corrected and what treatment plan will get you the best and most effective results.
Braces: Your Options Today
While there are still situations where conventional metal wires and brackets are the best and fastest treatment possible, there are many options today which are less visible and more comfortable to wear. From self-ligating Damon braces to the popular Invisalign® aligners, there are many options and we’ll talk about which ones we recommend for you.
When Should You Get Braces?
We most often perform treatment during the teen years, because that is the time when we can see how the adult teeth are coming in and the jaw is still malleable enough to align the teeth quickly and easily. However, if you’re an adult, don’t assume that it’s too late for braces! With modern orthodontic treatments, adults can also make changes to their smile within months.
The time to start orthodontic treatment varies from person to person. For a young child, it may make sense to wait until more adult teeth come in before beginning braces. We’re happy to arrange a follow-up appointment in 6, 9 or 12 months following our initial consultation, when we can see how the teeth and jaws are developing – occasionally, nature corrects some misalignment problems as the child grows and no orthodontic treatment is necessary. I’m happy to see what nature can do for you.
Preparing for Treatment
Maintaining your oral health during treatment is a priority. So prior to beginning braces, we’ll recommend that you have a checkup and cleaning at your dentist’s office. If you have any underlying dental or periodontal issues, these should be dealt with prior to orthodontic treatment.
We take records to understand your teeth and jaws better, including a second x-ray that shows the fit of your teeth and jaws, molds of your teeth, and photographs of your teeth and smile. These records give us the details we need to straighten your teeth.
We can give you the fees for treatment before those records are taken and we can send in a pre-authorization to your insurance, so you know your coverage. Lori and Elena in the front office are happy to help you with all of the paperwork.
So call us when you’re ready to find out more. We’re ready when you are – that first appointment is free in Winnipeg.
